NHLOA loses a friend

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of “Chief” Dennis Ryan, our friend and long-serving NHL Security Representative for the New York Rangers.

Nanuet resident Dennis P. Ryan, retired NYPD Chief, passed away February 6, 2006, after a hard fought battle with cancer. Chief Ryan was born June 20, 1939, in Washington Heights, NYC, to Patrick and Catherine (Scott) Ryan. He graduated from All Hallows High School in 1957. He attended and graduated Fordham University and J.F. Kennedy School of Business (Harvard). Chief Ryan joined the New York City Police Department in 1961 and retired in 1994. Chief Ryan was also the National Hockey League Security Representative for the New York Rangers Organization. He was best known for the tight security when the New York Rangers won the Stanley Cup. He also won the hearts of all the coaches, staff, players and NHL Officials.

Chief Ryan is survived by his wife, Pat (McKenna) Ryan, his son; Bernard Ryan and his wife Sue Ann and their sons’ Finnian and Shayne of New City; his daughter, MaryCatherine and her husband Michael O’Loughlin and their sons Bryan and Terence, of Dumont, NJ. A sister Elizabeth Bowler, of Nanuet, brother Francis Ryan of Fairlawn, NJ, nieces, nephews, and friends.

Dennis' passion for the game and for the people who are part of it are well known. It is this same passion that we can now see in his son Bernie, his daughter Mary Catherine (O'Loughlin), as well as his grandchildren Bryan, Terry, Finn and Shayne.

A friend of all Officials, it was always a pleasure to have Dennis sit down with us before a game and listen to him tell stories about the game and its people

Our deepest sympathy goes to his wife Mary Pat and the entire Ryan family. He will be missed by all of us.



RANGERS MOURN LOSS OF FORMER SECURITY CHIEF RYAN

Chief Dennis P. Ryan, a longtime member of the New York City Police Department who also served as the NHL security representative to the New York Rangers, died Monday at the age of 66.

Ryan, a resident of Nanuet, N.Y., retired from the NYPD in 1994 after a 33-year career on the force. That same year, he oversaw security for the Rangers as the team won the Stanley Cup.

"The entire Rangers organization is deeply saddened by the death of Chief Dennis Ryan, who succumbed to a long battle with cancer," said Rangers President and General Manager Glen Sather. "Chief Ryan was a beloved presence at Madison Square Garden, a lifelong Rangers fan, and an invaluable member of the organization's security team over many decades. His devotion to the Rangers will be long remembered and his character and kindness greatly missed. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Ryan family, including his wife, Mary Pat, his daughter Mary Catherine and his son, Bernie."

The family will be present to receive friends on Wednesday, Feb. 8, from 7-9 p.m. and on Thursday from 2-4 p.m. and 7 to 9 pm at Michael J. Higgins Funeral Home in New City, N.Y. A mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 10, at St. Anthony's Church in Nanuet. Burial will follow at St. Anthony's Cemetery in Nanuet, In lieu of flowers, the Ryan family requests to please make donations to "The Help Mikey "O" Conquer Cancer Fund", c/o PBA Local 180, PO BOX 570, Cresskill, NJ 07626.
